Sorry that I haven’t posted anything new :((
I’m nearly done school though!!
proof that The Beatles were sassy motherfuckers
Haha good lads
my favorite thing about tomie is that she’s both the victim and the villain in her own story
the idea of morality and treating other people as worthwhile beings never seems to occur to her, because for tomie, life isn’t something that’s valuable or precious
life just is, and it’s a constant, and everyone who’s not tomie is a bug — something to be squashed or played with idly when she gets bored
but tomie’s drive to be the only one, to be new and unique and absolutely original, is something that’s always a constant, in every incarnation of tomie in every story, and drives her to great lengths to achieve her goals
the best part about that is that she understands and recognizes herself — tomie has a very good handle on her own personality and psyche, to the degree that she’s more self-aware and realized in her own limits, drives, and desires than just about any other character
tomie thus can predict the movements and motivations behind any actions her other selves make, and she’s locked in an eternal battle with herself to be tomie, the only tomie there is
but because of tomie’s sway over men, which she’s demonstrably not always in control of or interested in exerting, they’ll always end up attacking her
and she’ll always end up falling victim to someone else, whether it’s another manifestation of herself or an absolutely addled victim of her curse, because they’ll always have her killed and she’ll just about always die
when death just means the creation of more tomies, and the dead one’s inevitable resurrection, that just creates an even bigger competitive atmosphere
combined with the various schemes of the men interested in tomie, either romantically/sexually/via a curse or intent upon destroying her as a type of revenge, that creates an infinite loop in which there are so many tomies running around that they can’t possibly eradicate each other for good
so there is no winning for tomie.
tomie will never come out on top, and tomie will never be the ‘only one’ — tomie’s game will only stop when everyone else is dead, and there are just an infinite supply of tomies, all poised to destroy each other.
tomie’s self-awareness leads me to believe that she knows this, she knows that it’s all one twisted hellish loop she’ll never be free from, and i think for a lot of the tomies in certain stories within the compilation — because they do display slightly different reactions to concepts like death and other beings — she’s largely evolved to treating other people like pawns even more than she already would have, because she knows they’ll eventually be gone and she’ll be the only one left
the idea of immortality is fun, and interesting, but in actuality? life becomes so dull and mundane that by this point, tomie is probably half just trying to carry out a routine that she’s so rooted into that she’s lost a lot of the ability to feel. of course, when people don’t react the way she expects, she freaks out slightly because it’s a change — this, here, isn’t a change. this is mundane, and boring, and tomie seems to just want this part of her life to be over with so she can go onto whatever comes next.
and dang, tomie. what a good representation of a person who’s so detached from the concept of humanity by suffering and greed that she loses what it ‘means to be human’ all together. and absolutely both suffers and does not suffer for it, because she’s beyond that concept entirely.
fuckin’ love tomie, both the character and the series. 10/10.
go read it (fair warning: a LOT of blood, a fuckton of body horror, murder, violence, suicide by hanging/falling/impalement/self-decapitation and seppuku, monster, burn wounds, child death, abduction, torture, attempted sexual assault, so much gore/guro, possession, a lot of experimentation, there’s a chapter where hair grows out of someone’s face and consumes her body, basically it’s uzumaki with absolutely no boundaries.) there’s three volumes of about eight chapters each and all of them are intriguing story lines with compelling characters. not just tomie!!! junji ito is good at people, both kind and cruel. if you’ve got the stomach for it, definitely go for it!

My personal patron Goddess.
Guan Yin: She who hears the cries of the world.
She is the embodiment of compassion, revered by Buddhists as the Goddess of Mercy. Her name is short for Guan Shi Yin, which means “Oberver of the sounds of the world”; Thus, Guan Yin is a compassionate being who watches for, and responds to, those who cry out for help.
She bears 1000 arms so that she may readily reach out to all who seek her out.
